The weekend before Thanksgiving I had my first go at selling my art on the street. I was pretty nervous, and anxious about the whole thing but luckily I had Jeff with me the whole time. I made a reservation with the P.S. 321 Flea Market so I could avoid getting harassed by the cops. Street vending in New York City is no easy task. The night before vending I ran around the apartment making sure I had everything I could possibly need. I had my table and chairs, I had display easels for the table, I had collages, I had greeting cards, I had bigger pieces of art… the list goes on. As I was typing I was going to literally list everything I brought with me but it finally dawned on me that nobody wants to read that!
The flea market opened at 9:00 but I had finished setting my table up at about 8:30 and the stress began. Eventually I got a customer who purchased four of my cards, which was a relief to me, at least for a little while. As the day went on more and more people stopped by to give me compliments and even asked about custom orders. But at the end of the day a sweet woman came by and purchased three of my collages. At first she didn’t have cash and I don’t have a cool gadget to accept credit cards ( lesson learned I need one of those!) so she left to go to an ATM. I was worried she might not come back, but she did!
After selling, Jeff and I called his parents to let them know how it went. I got asked very specific questions about sales and profits, and I felt like I was on an episode of Shark Tank and I wasn’t going to get a deal.
But since then I got a custom order from someone who saw me at the flea market. I am very pleased with that and hope to get more in the future.
Oh and at the table next to us a woman happened to have this toy on display that moved on its own. All the kids kept running over to look at this thing. Super annoying. I kept thinking “No! Come to my table!”
But I have super good news. Remember when I wrote about how I was applying for art residencies…Well I heard back from Brooklyn Art Space yesterday and I got their open-studio residency! I am so excited I start in January. I just feel so blessed!
